The Nevada State Demographer's Office serves the State of Nevada and the public at large by producing annual population estimates; total population projections; and age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin estimates and projections.
Estimating Nevada’s Population
The Nevada State Demographer’s office is funded by the Nevada Department of Taxation and is part of the Nevada Small Business Development Center. It is responsible for conducting annual population estimates for Nevada’s counties, cities, and towns.
The Nevada State Demographer’s position was established under NRS (Nevada Revised Statutes) 360.283. The position conducts population estimates which have a variety of uses. One of the primary uses is in the allocation of tax revenues to counties and governments within them (See NRS 354, 360, and 377). Direction for producing the estimates is provided by Nevada Administrative Code (NAC).
Section 360.300 to .390 of NAC which sets out definitions and procedures for conducting the annual estimates may be viewed by clicking here. NAC was amended, effective December 20, 2012 and those amendments can be viewed here. The intent of the amendments were to clarify occupancy rate calculations; due date from local goverments joining together to produce their own housing unit-based estimates through an inter-local agreement; deadlines for disseminating the estimates; and the framework for appealing the estimates.
An Adobe Acrobat document with the complete estimates from 2000 through 2012 is available by clicking here.
